This is how the noble families of Venice travelled for business or pleasure from the 15th century on, and cruising aboard a gondola still today brings with it a magic that is indescribable!
This craft, which is about 11 metres long, is a testament to the skills of the master carpenters, who managed to combine the perfection of forms with the perfection of technique, creating the ideal vessel for Venice: starting with the metal ornament at the bow, the ferro, which is a counterweight for the gondolier at the stern, to the asymmetries that enable a single rower, the flat-bottomed hull that makes it extremely easy to handle, the 280 pieces that make it up, hand-crafted from 8 different types of wood, and, lastly, the single oarlock, called the forcola.
You will have the pleasure of sailing for 30 minutes along the Canal Grande (Salute area) and exploring the picturesque smaller canals (Fenice area) on a gondola shared with at most 6 passengers and piloted by a gondolier who rows using a single oar in the Venetian style, standing and facing forward. And don’t forget to take lots of pics!
